Cambridge Young Learners English (YLE) are English language exams specifically designed for children aged 6–12 years. They are organised by Cambridge Assessment English, one of the most respected educational institutions in the world, and we at IH Bratislava regularly bring them directly to you.

The exams are divided into three levels, which follow on from one another:

Each level tests four language skills: Listening, Reading & Writing, and Speaking. The tasks are always adapted to the child's age – they are full of pictures, colours, and playful activities so that children feel as comfortable as possible.

Overview of the individual levels

Starters (Pre-A1) – the first step into English

Starters is the entry level, ideal for children with less experience in English. It focuses on basic vocabulary, simple sentences, and the ability to understand short instructions.

What does a child do in the Starters exam?

Listens to short recordings and matches words to pictures.
Reads simple sentences and answers questions.
During the speaking part, points to objects in a picture and answers simple questions (e.g. "How old are you? Have you got a brother?").

Movers (A1) – communication in everyday situations

Movers is the intermediate level. Children should be able to handle simple conversations, short texts, and basic written expression at this stage.

What does a child do in the Movers exam?

Listens to conversations and fills information into forms.
Looks for differences between two pictures (spot the difference).
Reads short stories and answers questions.
Writes short phrases and simple sentences.

Flyers (A2) – more advanced communication

Flyers is the highest level within YLE. Children work with longer texts, write connected sentences, and engage in more developed conversations.

What does a child do in the Flyers exam?

Understands longer stories and descriptions, even if they come across an unknown word.
Writes short messages, simple stories, and descriptions.
Talks about pictures, describes the action, and answers questions about their life.

How does the assessment work? No red pencils?

One of the greatest advantages of the Cambridge YLE exams is their positive approach to assessment. There is no traditional "pass / fail". Every child receives a certificate regardless of the result achieved.

Instead of percentages or grades, so-called shields are used:

Each of the three skills (Listening, Reading & Writing, Speaking) is awarded a maximum of 5 shields.
In total, a child can earn up to 15 shields.
The more shields they get, the better their result in the given skill.

The certificate is a wonderful motivation and also the first valuable proof of language proficiency, which is recognised worldwide.

When will the results arrive?

The delivery time of the results depends on the exam format. For the paper-based format, results are usually available within 4–6 weeks.

You will get access to the results online via the Cambridge portal. You can then conveniently collect the physical certificate directly from us at International House Bratislava.

How to register for the exam?

Registration for the Cambridge YLE exam is done exclusively through an authorised exam centre. The International House Bratislava language school is such an official centre, and we organise the exams directly in our modern premises.

How to choose the right level for your child?

Choosing the right level is crucial for success. An exam that is too easy might not motivate the child, while a more difficult one could be discouraging.

How to prepare a child for the exam?

7 practical tips for parents

1. Short, but regular

Instead of long marathon sessions, opt for 15–20 minutes of English every day. Consistency is more important than duration.

2. Listening through fun

Play English cartoons, songs, or audiobooks for your child during car rides or at meal times. After listening, ask simple questions: "Where did they go? What did they eat?"

3. Speaking without fear

Talk to your child in English about everyday things – what they did at school, what they like for lunch, what their favourite film is. Encourage full sentences, not just one-word answers.

4. Reading with pictures

Read English picture books together. Point to the words as you read so the child connects the spoken and written forms. Later, let the child read short sentences independently.

5. Writing in a playful way

Start with simple activities – labels for pictures, short sentences about a favourite toy or the weekend. Praise specific details and do not criticise every mistake.

6. Familiarise yourself with the exam format
