Recommended books for learning English

Reading is one of the most effective ways to naturally expand your vocabulary and improve your understanding of English. Our teachers have selected books that really work – for beginners and advanced learners alike.

What English books do you recommend?

I definitely recommend books from the English Readers series, which are available for all levels – from complete beginners to advanced learners. For example, Pearson English Readers, Usborne English Readers for Children, or Cambridge English Readers.

Some of my favourite books, which I also use in my own English studies, are the stories of Agatha Christie – especially for those who enjoy mysteries and detective fiction. A gripping story naturally motivates you to keep reading, and you absorb new expressions without even realising it.

What about films and TV series?

Films and TV series are brilliant for learning English overall. However, I recommend using English subtitles rather than Slovak ones – this way, your brain connects the spoken word with its written form. For example, the series Friends is ideal for this purpose – natural conversational language, short episodes, and humour that keeps you watching.

What's your tip for remembering grammar better?

Learning grammar can be challenging, but it doesn't have to be dull. I recommend visiting English educational websites – for example BBC Learning English, where you can improve in a fun and interactive way.

The most important thing when studying English is to do it as part of something you enjoy. If you combine learning with a favourite activity, you'll be happy to keep at it and improvement will come naturally.

Effective methods for learning English

What books do you recommend for someone who wants to learn English in a more natural and effective way?

That depends on each person's preferences. If you enjoy detective stories, I wholeheartedly recommend the Hercule Poirot series by Agatha Christie – her stories are full of suspense and you never know who the murderer is. If you prefer romance novels, try Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. It's a novel that explores the complex relationship between the heroine and Mr Rochester in a fascinating way, showing how the social divides of the time stood in the way of love.

Which TV series would you recommend?

I'm currently watching Mad Men. It's set in the USA in the 1950s and follows the story of a man working at an advertising agency with a mysterious past. What's interesting is that the series gradually moves through the 1960s and 70s – allowing you to see how society and culture changed over time. The characters are brilliantly written, and once you get to know them, you realise they're just like us – they struggle with their problems but never give up.

What advice would you give to people who are just starting to learn English?

Start slowly, be patient, and don't worry about making mistakes – they're a natural part of the learning process. I'd recommend investing in a good English dictionary. My favourite is the Collins Cobuild Dictionary, which contains detailed explanations and real-life examples of how to use words and phrases in everyday conversation.

What are your recommendations for learning English more effectively?

It's important to incorporate English into activities you already enjoy – whether that's reading books or blogs, watching films, or listening to the radio. If you enjoy it, you can do it every day and you'll pick up new expressions and vocabulary much more quickly. It's also useful to carry a vocabulary notebook with you – whenever you come across a new word, write it down and then actively try to use it in conversation.

Do you have any special tips for understanding English grammar better?

If you want to improve your grammar, I recommend the book Grammar in Use by Raymond Murphy. It contains clear and straightforward grammar explanations as well as practical exercises that will help you truly understand and use the language – not just memorise it.
