C2 Proficiency exam format and content

The formats listed below are the same for both computer-based and paper-based exams.

Reading and Use of English

Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Parts / questions: 7 parts / 53 questions
Weighting: 40%

You work with a variety of text types (fiction, journalism, academic articles, manuals). Vocabulary, grammar and reading comprehension are tested at the highest level.

Writing

Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Parts / questions: 2 tasks
Weighting: 20%

You write two texts: a compulsory essay and a choice from a report, review, article or letter. You are assessed on your ability to argue, structure text and use a rich range of language.

Listening

Time: approximately 40 minutes
Parts / questions: 4 parts / 30 questions
Weighting: 20%

You listen to lectures, interviews, speeches and discussions. You need to understand both main ideas and details at a natural pace of speech.

Speaking

Time: 16 minutes (pair of candidates)
Parts / questions: 3 parts
Weighting: 20%

The speaking test is conducted in pairs with another candidate in front of two examiners. You are assessed on fluency, pronunciation, grammar and your ability to discuss.

Grading system and levels

To pass the exam, you need to achieve approximately 60% of the total marks. You do not need to reach this threshold in every individual paper.

Successful candidates with a grade of A, B or C receive a certificate at C2 level. A candidate who does not reach C2 but demonstrates C1-level skills receives a certificate at C1 level.

Results for computer-based exams are available within 5–10 working days. For paper-based exams, results take 4–6 weeks. You can view your results via the online results service.

Computer-based vs. paper-based exam

At IH Bratislava you can choose between the computer-based and paper-based version of the C2 Proficiency exam. The content and grading are identical – only the method of completing the exam differs.

What is the difference between C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency?

C1 Advanced (CAE) certifies an advanced level of English. C2 Proficiency (CPE) is one level higher – it demonstrates near-native proficiency. If you are not sure which is right for you, test your level online.

How many candidates are needed to run the exam?

We can run the exam with as few as four candidates.

How long is the C2 Proficiency certificate valid?

The certificate is valid for life. Unlike IELTS or TOEFL, you never need to renew it.

When are results available?

Can I retake the exam if I do not pass?

Yes, you can retake the exam at any subsequent session. There is no waiting period.
