IHCYLT (International House Certificate in Teaching Young Learners and Teenagers)

The course's main objective is to introduce trainees to, and help them (re)evaluate and (re)consider, the main principles involved in teaching Young Learners English.
The course is not designed with one particular age group in mind. Input sessions, using processes which could be suitable to be adapted to use with young learners and teenagers, cover the complete range of young learners (from 2-16 years).

The course is produced and standardised by International House World Organisation (IHWO) and successful participants will be issued with an IHWO certification.

Teaching practice

Each participant will be observed teaching Young Learner classes by an approved tutor for a minimum of 4 lessons at 2 different levels (for a minimum of 3 hours). These classes may be the teacher's own classes or special Teaching Practice classes created for the course. There will be a minimum of 45 minutes tuition time (pre-lesson guidance and post-lesson feedback) given for each hour of teaching.

Observation of experienced teachers

Each participant will observe experienced teachers of Young Learners teaching for a minimum of 4 hours. For each of the hours of observation, participants must complete an assigned observation task.

Peer Observations

Participants are also required to do a minimum of 4 hours of observation; on the full-time, intensive format trainees will observe each other. On the part-time, extensive course, trainees will have the opportunity to observe each other as well as YL teachers currently employed by International House Bratislava.

Homework Tasks

Each participant will be assigned 13 homework tasks.  A minimum of 8 must be submitted to the assigned tutor for feedback and support as required.

Each participant will be given a minimum of two tutorials of approximately 30 minutes each - these will involve the discussion of observation tasks and trainees' general progression up to that point of the course.

Written work

Each participant will need to complete two written assignments. These will be set and submitted during the course. A third optional assignment will be set during the course but can be submitted up to two years from completion of the course. In addition, there will be homework tasks set after some input sessions.

addDates and Fees
We intend to run the following courses over the coming year. We reserve the right to cancel a course if fewer than 4 people are enrolled.

Extensive course:

The whole length of the course will be spread over two months as the trainees need to do at least 10 observations themselves and be observed four times, in addition to the input sessions listed above. Stretching this over a longer time gives all trainees the chance to finish all teacher practice sessions, observations, the homework and the two assignments while they are teaching.

The course fee is 650 EUR.
