Basic phrases in Spanish before your holiday in Spain
Going to Spain and don’t want to rely only on gestures? This short cheat sheet gives you exactly the basic Spanish phrases for vacation you’ll use most often: for greetings, ordering food, asking for directions, at the airport, and in unexpected situations. Just a few words and communication instantly gets easier — and locals usually appreciate it.

1) Quick start: greetings + politeness (the most important words)
¡Hola! (o-la) – HiBuenos días. (bue-nos dí-as) – Good morning / Good day
Buenas tardes. (bue-nas tar-des) – Good afternoon
Buenas noches. (bue-nas no-čes) – Good evening / Good night
Por favor. (por fa-vor) – Please
Gracias. (gra-sias) – Thank you
De nada. (de na-da) – You’re welcome
Perdón / Disculpe. (per-don / dis-kul-pe) – Sorry / Excuse me (polite address)
2) When you don’t understand something (phrases that will save you)
No entiendo. (no en-tien-do) – I don’t understand¿Puede repetir, por favor? (pue-de re-pe-tir por fa-vor) – Can you repeat that, please?
Más despacio, por favor. (mas des-pa-sio) – Slower, please
¿Habla inglés? (a-bla in-gles) – Do you speak English?
¿Puede ayudarme? (pue-de a-ju-dar-me) – Can you help me?
3) Restaurant, café, bar (ordering without stress)
Una mesa para dos, por favor. (u-na me-sa pa-ra dos) – A table for two, pleaseQuisiera… (ki-sie-ra) – I would like…
Quisiera un café, por favor. (ki-sie-ra un ka-fe, por fa-vor) – I’d like a coffee, please
Agua sin gas / con gas, por favor. (a-gua sin gas / kon gas) – Still / sparkling water, please

La cuenta, por favor. (la kuen-ta) – The bill, please

4) Getting around the city (when you’re looking for a route or place)
¿Dónde está…? (don-de es-ta) – Where is…?¿Dónde está el baño? (don-de es-ta el ba-ňo) – Where is the restroom?
¿Cómo llego al centro? (ko-mo je-go al sen-tro) – How do I get to the city center?
Estoy perdido/a. (es-toj per-di-do/a) – I’m lost
A la derecha / a la izquierda. (a la de-re-ča / a la is-kier-da) – To the right / to the left
¿Puede mostrármelo en el mapa? (pue-de mos-trar-me-lo en el ma-pa) – Can you show it to me on the map?
5) Airport and transfers (check-in, gate, luggage)
¿Dónde está el check-in? (don-de es-ta el ček-in) – Where is the check-in?¿Dónde está la puerta número [10]? (puer-ta nú-me-ro) – Where is gate number [10]?
¿Dónde recojo el equipaje? (don-de re-ko-cho el e-ki-pa-che) – Where do I pick up my luggage?
He perdido mi equipaje. (e per-di-do mi e-ki-pa-che) – I’ve lost my luggage
¿Cuánto se tarda en llegar al centro? (kuan-to se tar-da) – How long does it take to get to the city center?
6) Emergency situations (better to have it and not need it)
¡Ayuda! (a-ju-da) – Help!Necesito un médico. (ne-se-si-to un me-di-ko) – I need a doctor
Me han robado. (me an ro-ba-do) – I’ve been robbed
¿Puede llamar a la policía? (pue-de ja-mar a la po-li-sí-a) – Can you call the police?
Tip for use: Save 10–15 phrases (greeting, please/thank you, the bill, restroom, help) in your phone notes. In practice, that will make a bigger difference than memorizing long sentences.
