Pronunciation (‘Speaking like a native’)

Pronunciation (‘Speaking like a native’)

Description
Do you feel nervous when teaching pronunciation? What are the difficulties when providing good models of language? Why do so many schools and students place emphasis on native speakers? Is having a native accent essential for communication?

These are some of the questions which will be discussed on this course. It will also look at the importance of pronunciation for both good listening and speaking skills in both native speaker and non-native speaker contexts. The course will be highly practical with lots of opportunities for participants to develop their own pronunciation skills, as well as learning techniques to teach pronunciation effectively in the classroom.

During the course, each day will focus on a specific area of pronunciation which is necessary for clear communication. Individual phonemes and the phonemic chart will be looked at including a focus on confusing sounds and minimal pairs. Intonation and stress are also important aspects of pronunciation and can be used with great effect to change the meaning and message of what is said. Furthermore, features of connected speech will be practised as it is these features which often help speech to sound more natural (and therefore possibly also more ‘native’).

By the end of the course, participants will feel more confident in their ability to teach pronunciation because of a greater knowledge of its essential features and because of ample opportunities to practice pronunciation on this course.

Learning outcomes
  • Understand the importance of good pronunciation for both listening and speaking skills
  • Identify the main aspects of pronunciation which help and hinder communication
  • Acknowledge the difference between native to non-native and non-native to non-native communication
  • Critically assess the importance of ‘speaking like a native’ for languages as lingua franca.
  • Be ready to teach phonemes, stress and intonation, and features of connected speech to students at a variety of levels
  • Design activities which specifically develop students’ pronunciation skills

Discourse Analysis for Language Teachers

Discourse Analysis for Language Teachers

Description
Taking inspiration from the title of McCarthy’s book, this course will look at the role of discourse in language learning. While most coursebooks and course descriptions offer a clear focus on skills work, grammar and vocabulary, and also increasingly pronunciation, discourse tends to be forgotten or ignored. So what exactly is discourse? Why is an understanding of discourse useful for language teachers? How can we encourage a greater awareness and use of discourse in the language classroom?

Some of the topics covered in this practical, as well as theoretical, course will include:
  • Syntax and word order in sentences
  • Linguistic devices for emphasis
  • Discourse in written texts (reading and writing skills)
  • Discourse in spoken texts (listening and speaking skills)
  • The importance of cohesion and coherence
  • Discourse management in examination situations

The course will be useful for all language teachers who are interested in encouraging their students to be better communicators in written and spoken language. It will also be invaluable for teachers who are preparing students for Cambridge examinations in showing how the criteria for marking ‘Discourse Management’ apply to both the speaking and writing exams, as well as helping students understand better the listening and reading exams.

By the end of the course, teachers will feel more confident in incorporating discourse into their lessons and will be able to help their students understand and produce written and spoken texts which are more fluent and communicative.

Learning outcomes
  • Understand the role of discourse in successful communication
  • Appreciate the importance of discourse in language learning
  • Be better equipped to teach students about discourse in written and spoken texts
  • Feel more confident when assessing ‘Discourse Management’ in relation to language examinations
  • Have adapted and created a variety of practical activities and techniques to exemplify the theoretical aspects of discourse to language learners at a variety of levels

Knowledge about Language

Knowledge about Language

Description
What are subordinate clauses? What exactly is a finite verb? What is the difference between a gerund and a present participle? And why do these types of questions matter when we are teaching (or studying) languages?

Whilst it is often better not to overwhelm students with linguistic metalanguage, a knowledge and understanding of language and how it works can help us become better teachers – to become confident when answering questions about language, to know how to explain sometimes complex notions in a simple way, and also deciding what is appropriate to be taught as well as when in a student’s linguistic development certain language items are best encountered.

During this course, participants will look at the main elements that constitute language: nouns, verbs, adjectives & adverbs, determiners, prepositions, clauses and syntax. These aspects will be covered both in a practical and theoretical way, enabling participants to put their knowledge into practice in the classroom in order to benefit the students. Activities which encourage the noticing of patterns, uncovering of grammar and the promotion of learner autonomy will all be utilised, rather than the strict presentation and practice of rules.

By the end of the course, participants will have developed a deeper knowledge of language as it is used, and be more confident when dealing with language in the classroom.

Learning outcomes
Have a deeper knowledge about language in terms of grammar and syntax
  • Comprehend differences between nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, determiners, prepositions and clauses in order to benefit their own teaching and students’ development of language competencies
  • Understand how to encourage the uncovering and noticing of grammar by the students, rather than its presentation by the teacher
  • Apply various techniques and activities to effectively transmit knowledge of language in the classroom
  • Appreciate how a knowledge of language can affect meaning and communication
