TKT exam
TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) is an international test for English teachers. It is a written examination only and it tests the knowledge needed by English teachers to teach English to speakers of other languages. It does not test language proficiency or practical skills of teachers, and there is no listening, speaking or extended writing component to the test.
Who is TKT for?
TKT is suitable for teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners all over the world and can be taken at any stage in a teacher’s career. It is for experienced teachers from all teaching backgrounds, inexperienced teachers who would like to learn more about teaching English, and it is also ideal for people who would like to teach English but have not yet started teaching. There are no formal entry requirements for TKT, however, candidates are advised to have at least an intermediate level of English (PET/IELTS band score of 4.0/B1).
Career prospects with a TKT certificate and its recognition worldwide
Because it is awarded by Cambridge ESOL, part of the University of Cambridge, TKT is internationally recognised, highly respected and a benchmark for quality. It is widely recognised around the world by Ministries of Education and education authorities. It enhances teachers’ job prospects and gives them knowledge and skills that will help them in their everyday teaching practice. It is also a step towards other qualifications. After taking TKT, teachers who want to develop their knowledge further can progress to other well-established Cambridge ESOL qualifications, such as CELTA and DELTA modules, CELTYL and ICELT. TKT also offers teachers easier access to specialised and practical literature in the ELT (English Language Teaching) field.
What does TKT involve?
TKT is divided into separate modules. You can take them all, or just choose the ones that meet your needs. You have total flexibility in how you take the modules and receive a certificate for each one completed.
TKT Modules
Core modules
Module 1: Language and background to language learning and teaching.
Module 2: Lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching.
