The way of teaching and methods
The main goal of IH Bratislava is to improve students´ language competence in their chosen foreign language.
International House Bratislava uses a variety of teaching methods based on the principles of Communicative Language Teaching.
Basic principles:
- maximum student participation in class
- the use of the students’ first language is minimized; the target language is used at all levels
- incorporation of authentic language and resources into learning/teaching
- integration of all aspects of the language: grammar, lexis, functions and skills
- development of a variety of competencies within each of the basic skills: speaking, listening, reading, writing
- attention to functions (functional language / phrases / sentence structures) needed to communicate in a variety of situations i.e. agreeing, making suggestions, clarifying, asking for directions etc.)
- a focus on phonology improves students’ listening comprehension as well as pronunciation
- grammar is presented and practiced in context to clarify its meaning and use in communication
- encouraging learners´ autonomy, thus enabling them to develop their language competencies independently
- a focus on the practical use of the target language
Our courses are designed to meet the specific needs of the students based on the analysis of the students´ requirements undertaken at the start of the course.
